A Multipurpose Stage for a Multipurpose Venue

Tanks Arts Centre is one of the most innovative arts and performance spaces in Australia. Housed in three concrete fuel tanks which were built in 1944 as part of the Royal Australian Navy war effort, the tanks have been converted to art gallery and performance spaces as part of the Cairns Regional Council’s  commitment to community cultural development.

As a multi-purpose venue which could hold an art exhibition one day and a rock concert the next, Tanks Arts Centre needed a simple, flexible stage system that could serve all the requirements of the venue.

SSE provided Tanks Art Centre with twenty four Basic Line StageDex modules from Prolyte Products with a full set of telescopic legs to provide stage heights of 45cm up to 60cm. The standard 2m x 1m stage modules are constructed from an aluminium extruded frame with a plywood top. Each module is only 90mm deep and weighs 37kg which makes storage and handling extremely easy.

As is the case with all Prolyte products, the engineering and design of StageDex is provided to the user as load charts and TUV certification. With a uniformly distributed load capacity of 750kg/m2 and point loads of up to 500kg the StageDex system exceeds the ratings that are often applied to permanent stages in performing arts venues.

StageDex provide flexibility, ease of use, and safety for temporary staging systems at an extremely competitive price point. Other products on the market either meet the specifications of StageDex at a significantly higher price, or have a similar price but specifications that don’t come close. The StageDex system provides both.

With a full range of deck sizes including curves and custom shapes, and a modular leg system that allows the use of standard 48mm OD tube legs as well as larger framing systems for large concert stages, there is a product to suit every event. By using the same deck modules with different support systems your inventory is able to be used more efficiently and increases its return on investment.

Paul Barton, Technical Manager of Tanks Arts Centre, said “The StageDex staging platforms have worked extremely well for our venue, being easy to handle, set up and dismantle. They are robust yet lightweight, and very versatile. ”
